Spelinspektionen intends to agree to the Macolin Convention

The Spelinspektionen, or Swedish Gaming Authority, has announced its intentions to join the Macolin Convention as part of its efforts to tackle corruption in sports betting.

A spokesperson for the authority said: “The announcement that the Government intends to accede to the Macolin Convention will facilitate the work against match-fixing and corruption in sports.

“This is in line with the Government's proposal for the Swedish Gambling Authority's expanded mandate and resources in match-fixing and illegal gambling.

“The Swedish Gambling Authority is already active in the European work against match-fixing and joining the convention will enable the authority to become even more involved in that work.”

The Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions, better known as the Macolin Convention, is an international treaty against match-fixing in sports.

Signed in Macolin, Switzerland, the Convention aims to prevent, slots monitor, detect and penalise unethical or illegal sports betting operations.

In addition, the treaty hopes to tackle conflicts of interest when it comes to legal betting from both sports betting operators and organisations.

The Macolin Convention was initially brought into effect on 1 September 2019, with 30 signatories from seven different parties.

The Spelinspektionen first announced its intentions to join the Macolin Convention on 14 September 2023.

This was part of proposals to increase funding for the organisation, which would allow it to become a national platform required to meet the treaty standards.
